Lewis Capaldi has captivated listeners with his soulful voice since releasing his debut single “Bruises” earlier this year, continuing that with the release of his Bloom EP, which arrived via Virgin/Capitol Records on Oct. 20. The Scottish singer-songwriter has since released two live videos, one for “Bruises” and another Bloom track “Lost on You,” and today (Nov. 16) he premieres another for “Fade” — this time, adding some color to the visual.
The video begins with Capaldi’s silhouette softly singing the first verse, seated before a red backdrop. As he makes his way through a room that changes colors throughout — red, orange, green, purple, blue — Capaldi emotes louder and louder, “Girl, you make my heart break more every day / But don’t fade away.” Although he’s clearly the focus in the video, Capaldi admits he’s not very comfortable in front of the camera — but the “amazing” Alexandra Gavillet, who directed the video, made a major difference.
“She was great in helping me feel a bit more at ease with everything,” Capaldi tells Billboard. “We filmed the live video for the track in a studio in London a month or so ago, and I’m still so pleased with how it turned out. Visuals were never really something I considered when I started making music but over the last year it’s something I’ve been becoming so much more interested in.”
Of the song itself, Capaldi tells Billboard that “Fade” is his proudest moment as a songwriter so far. “It came together so naturally over the course of two days in New York, and the fact that I got to write it and have it produced by Malay, who’s someone I’ve been a big fan of for a long time, was such an honor.” (Malay co-wrote “Fade” with Capaldi, and has worked with Frank Ocean, Sam Smith and ZAYN.)
