Venezuelan Singer Gretchen Dies at 28

Venezuelan singer/songwriter Gretchen — born Gretchen Serrao and also known as Gretchen G — died at age 28 on Monday.

The news was confirmed Wednesday (Oct. 10) by the singer’s family through a statement sent by her publicist.

“It is with heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our beloved daughter and sister Gretchen Serrao (Gretchen G) on Monday, October 8th,” the statement reads. “Her passion was music and always worked towards her dream of sharing it with the world. She was a wonderful soul and free spirit and will be dearly missed by us all. We want to officially declare that Gretchen suffered from a disease that she battled for years and one that finally defeated her resulting in her passing. We hope that everyone remembers her for the beautiful person she was. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you – The Serrao-Cabrera family.”

Gretchen started her professional career in 2012 with the album Mirame, whose first single, “La Salida,” co-written and produced by Adrian Posse, peaked at No. 10 on Billboard‘s Tropical Songs airplay chart (dated Dec. 8, 2012). She had two later entries on the same chart: “Te Amare Por Siempre,” which peaked at No. 14 (chart dated March 23, 2013), and “Tu Princesa,” featuring Gocho, which reached No. 2 on the chart dated Jan. 4, 2014.
