Finnair wants to weigh people before flights

Finnair wants passengers to volunteer to be weighed before flights  (iStock) Finland’s Finnair is hoping to get at least 150 passengers on every flight to volunteer to be weighed along with their luggage. While it may sound unusual, there’s logic behind the move: The airline wants a more accurate metric for determining aircraft weight and balance, which can in turn make operations more efficient. Previously, Finnair has had to rely on 2009 estimates made by the European Aviation Safety Agency, according to YLE News. “We want to make sure we have the best possible data at our disposal also in this respect,” Suokas told the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. “That’s why we’re collecting data from our own network.” More from Travel + Leisure Passengers’ weights can also change by ...

Astros defeat Dodgers in Game 7, win first World Series in franchise history

George Springer and the Houston Astros rocketed to the top of the baseball galaxy Wednesday night, winning the first World Series championship in franchise history by romping past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7. Playing for a city still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and wearing an H Strong logo on their jerseys, the Astros brought home the prize that had eluded them since they started out in 1962 as the Colt .45s. “I always believed that we could make it,” All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve said. “We did this for them.” For a Series that was shaping up as an October classic, Game 7 quickly became a November clunker as Houston scored five runs in the first two innings off an ineffective Yu Darvish. Feds: Truck attack suspect said ‘he felt good about’ rampage

NEW YORK –  The suspect in a deadly truck rampage was inspired by the Islamic State group’s online videos and plotted his New York City attack for two months, renting a truck ahead of time to practice turning it, federal authorities said in a criminal complaint bringing terrorism charges against the Uzbek immigrant. Sayfullo Saipov chose the attack date to target Halloween crowds, according to the criminal complaint. And after his trail of terror was halted by a police bullet, he asked to display the Islamic State group’s flag in his hospital room, saying “he felt good about what he had done,” authorities said. Brought to court in a wheelchair, Saipov was held without bail on charges that could bring the death penalty. Separately, the FBI was questioning people who ...

9/11 neighborhood shaken by truck attack fears it’s targeted

NEW YORK –  On his way to work each morning, Antonio Collac stops to light a candle at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, a stone-columned sanctuary two blocks from lower Manhattan’s ground zero. There, beneath a vaulted roof that was pierced by the landing gear from one of the jets that felled the World Trade Center, and before the altar where firefighters laid the broken body of Mychal Judge — the chaplain often counted as Sept. 11’s first victim — the tragedy of that morning 16 autumns ago is anything but abstract. Collac, a designer who has worked in the neighborhood for many years, says he, too, is a vessel for memories of that day. But on Wednesday morning, Collac came to offer a new prayer — this one for the eight people killed and 12 seriously injured when terror ...

Scullin told a dispatcher on Oct. 24 that Pleskovic had been attacked. He said the victim was his fiancee’s mother, and that he lived at the home. It’s unclear whether Scullin has an attorney. He’s being held on $1 million bond.
