It all started with a random email and a few keywords: “Netflix,” “sci-fi” and “Winona Ryder.” Was synth duo S U R V I V E (comprised of Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon) down to score a new original show for these dudes calling themselves The Duffer Brothers? You bet they were, and that theme song went on to become the Emmy-Award Winning soundtrack to Stranger Things.
Stein and Dixon started out scoring each episode one piece at a time. Halfway through the process, they were asked to do the official theme for the show — and this is where the story gets really technical and interesting. S U R V I V E breaks down the instrumentation noise by noise, explaining to the hosts of the Song Exploder podcast how they built that mysteriously dark mood and why they chose to use each piece for each part.
It’s a really interesting interview running about 15 minutes. Listen to the full episode below.
