Fearless freshmen help Tennessee topple No. 2 Texas

10:45 PM ET Graham HaysespnW.com Close Graham Hays covers college sports for espnW, including softball and soccer. Hays began with ESPN in 1999. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — There was a time this was the place teams came to prove themselves. Or at least it was a place where they came to try, even if the team that took the court in orange inside Thompson-Boling Arena proved too much to overcome most days. So the script felt familiar Sunday as the faithful filed in nearly 10,000 strong for one of the grand old rivalries of women’s basketball. Familiar but not quite the same. In this case, the home team had something to prove in Knoxville. And the shade of orange that stood in the challenger’s way wasn’t bright but rather burnt orange. Unbeaten but also largely untested through ...

The injuries piled up for the Saints on Thursday night, led by star rookie running back Alvin Kamara. Get caught up on all the key Week 14 injuries here. Cooper has trended in the right direction all week since missing last Sunday’s win over the New York Giants because of a sprained left ankle and concussion. He cleared the concussion protocol Wednesday then practiced on a limited basis Friday. Team sources told ESPN’s Dan Graziano that the Raiders had entered Friday under the impression that Cooper was not going to practice and would miss Sunday’s game. Cooper went to the trainers and said he would like to try to practice, and they agreed to see how he ...

Source: Caldwell deal guaranteed for 2018 only

9:29 AM ET TAMPA, Fla. — Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell’s multiyear contract extension, signed earlier this year, appears to provide less job security than initially believed, a source confirmed to ESPN. The source said Caldwell’s extension is guaranteed for only 2018 with team options beyond that, meaning if the Lions decided to fire Caldwell, they would have to pay him for next season only. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, dealing with a bruised right hand, is expected to play Sunday at the Buccaneers, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Messages left with the Lions were not immediately returned Sunday. NFL Network first reported the extensions contained in Caldwell’s contract. Caldwell is in his fourth season with the Lions and has a 33-27 record, incl...

Follow live: Steelers host Ravens

If the Ravens are going to upset Steelers, it’s going to be up to their offense to do so. Baltimore’s usually stingy defense has allowed a score on all four series: touchdown, touchdown, field goal and field goal. The 20 points are the second-most allowed by the Ravens in the first half this season. Jamison Hensley, ESPN Staff Writer

Sources: Fiedorowicz’s career may be cut short

6:39 AM ET After suffering at least his fourth concussion in the past two seasons last weekend, Houston Texans tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz could be forced to retire at age 26, sources told ESPN. Fiedorowicz, a 2014 third-round pick out of Iowa, was placed on injured reserve in early September because of a concussion. He returned to Houston’s active roster in Week 10 but was placed on IR again last week after suffering at least his third concussion this season. Vrabel is just one year in as defensive coordinator for the Texans, but players praise him and coach Bill O’Brien sees him as a head coach one day. Now, because of either his choice or that of Texans doctors, Fiedorowicz might not be able to play again, sources said. He will have to pass a team physical, and there are no a...

Sources: Browns hired GM before NYG meeting

6:31 AM ET The Cleveland Browns hired new general manager John Dorsey before the New York Giants could even get a chance to interview him, league sources told ESPN. Dorsey was scheduled to fly to New York this week to interview with the Giants on Tuesday, sources said. The Browns were aware of the Giants’ interest, and it contributed to them acting when they did Thursday, firing executive vice president Sashi Brown and hiring Dorsey to a four-year contract on the same day. The on-field losing didn’t give former Browns VP Sashi Brown much of a chance, but his plan to amass draft picks sets the table for the next regime. Dorsey was in the running for the Giants’ general manager job, which the team would like to fill before it hires a head coach. With Dorsey out, former Caro...

It was fitting then that in a year filled with both extremes, the two finished on a high in leading Toronto FC to its first MLS Cup triumph, a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. Bradley was everywhere in leading Toronto to a dominating performance. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Bradley connected on 65 of 71 passes, while making 5 tackles, 6 clearances and 4 interceptions. He was part of a harassing midfield that never let Seattle breathe. “He stifled them,” said...
