She & Him Release Original His & Hers Same-Sex Love Songs for ‘Universal Love’ Project

She & Him, the indie folk group made up of actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and singer/guitarist M. Ward, released two new songs on Thursday to celebrate queer love as a part of the “Universal Love” campaign. “She Gives Her Love to Me” and “He Gives His Love to Me” are two versions of the same love song that reflect two different kinds of relationships.

The folksy tunes are She & Him’s first original songs released by the duo in five years. The tracks are identical in almost every way, with a light band of guitar, bass, drums and horns accompanying Deschanel’s vocals. But the two songs feature opposite pronouns from one another, with Deschanel crooning “She gives her love to me unconditionally/ How could I ever refuse ya,” on “She Gives Her Love to Me,” while swapping “she” and “her” for “he” and “his” on “He Gives His Love to Me.”

“We believe love is universal, and that love songs should be too,” the two wrote on Twitter.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Deschanel and Ward said they were interested in writing these songs to find different ways to convey love through music. “What drew us to this project is that it opens up new ways of thinking about songwriting,” they said. “It would be amazing if our songs help to inspire other artists to engage with lyrics in a more open and inclusive way.”

The songs are a part of the ongoing “Universal Love” campaign from Sony Music and MGM Resorts. The  campaign’s first EP, titled Universal Love — Wedding Songs Reimagined, featured Bob Dylan, Kesha, St. Vincent and more covering old love songs with swapped pronouns, making them about same-sex relationships.
