RuPaul Lands Starring Role in New Netflix Original Series ‘AJ and the Queen’

From being an internationally recognized recording artist to one of the world’s most prominent reality show hosts, RuPaul Charles is undoubtedly a living legend. Now, the musician, actor, model and author is about to add yet another project to his résumé.

Netflix announced Friday (May 11) that RuPaul is set to star in the upcoming Netflix comedy series AJ and the Queen. Along with starring in the show, the Drag Race host will also be taking charge as a writer and executive producer, alongside Sex and the City and 2 Broke Girls’ Michael Patrick King.

RuPaul will star as Ruby, a less-than-successful drag queen touring the nightclubs of America in a beaten-down van trying to spread her message of love. Joining Ruby on her cross-country adventures is AJ, an 11-year-old orphan with a sharp tongue.

Netflix also teased that we’re going to get regular tastes of RuPaul singing, since the character of Ruby will be performing a “killer musical number” at all of the clubs that she visits.

This is the latest of RuPaul’s upcoming television projects. In August of last year, Hulu announced that they would be developing a series from RuPaul and producing juggernaut J.J. Abrams tentatively titled Queen. The upcoming show will detail a fictionalized version of RuPaul’s life, from working it as a club kid to becoming the international superstar he is today.
