A veritable wrecking crew of female songwriters, engineers and artists have been assembled to participate in ASCAP’s inaugural “She Is The Music” Song Camp, taking place Oct. 17-19 in Nashville. Created in response to the USC Annenberg study detailing inequalities for women in the music business, the She Is The Music initiative aims to promote inclusivity and increase opportunities for female music creators.
Confirmed participants in the camp, which will be located at Ron Fair’s Faircraft Studio, include Grammy-winning superstar Mary J. Blige, as well as hit songwriters Stacey Barthe (“Cheers (Drink to That),” Rihanna), Ingrid Burley, (“Love Drought,” Beyonce), Audra Mae (“Little Red Wagon,” Miranda Lambert), Priscilla Renea (“Timber,” Pitbull, “California King,” Rihanna) and Emily Weisband (“Thy Will,” Hillary Scott), among others.
ASCAP has also enlisted several top engineers, including Kesha Lee (“This Is America,” Childish Gambino) and Maria Elisa Ayerbe (Ricky Martin, J.Lo), as well as producers Ali Stone, Femke Weidema and production duo The Wildcardz.
“I’m looking forward to collaborating with these amazing women and to contribute to the goals of She Is The Music,” said Blige. “We all have the power to create change. As we continue to lift each other up, we will be unstoppable.”
ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews added that the performing rights org is strongly committed to advancing equality for women in music. “As a company, ASCAP is proud to have a large number of women in executive leadership positions, and we have a long history of successful song camps that have brought men and women together to write some of the biggest hit songs,” she said. “We believe that still more can be done to further an inclusive music industry culture. To that end, it is important to give women as many opportunities as possible to share their talents with the world. ‘She Is The Music’ is a wonderful way to bring us all together to focus on that goal.”
She Is The Music was cofounded by Alicia Keys, Universal Music Publishing Group Chairman and CEO Jody Gerson, Grammy Award-winning engineer Ann Mincieli and WME partner and head of East Coast Music Samantha Kirby.
