States Warn of Budget Crunch Under Republican Tax Plan

WASHINGTON — Since getting crushed by the recession a decade ago, the state of Oregon has been on an economic upswing. The jobless rate has dipped below 4 percent from a high of 12 percent in 2009, home values are up and people are flocking to the state. Net migration accounted for roughly 88 percent of Oregon’s population growth between 2016 and 2017, according to a Portland State University study. But state officials worry that all the economic progress is about to be undercut by the $1.5 trillion Republican tax plan sailing through Congress. While lawmakers say the plan will boost growth and strengthen the economy, Oregon officials say the bill could have the opposite effect by making the state a less affordable place to live and putting a squeeze on state and local budgets. “What I am ...

Politics is ruining Thanksgiving. How to keep that from happening.

© Provided by NBCU News Group, a division of NBCUniversal Media LLC Image: Traditional Holiday Stuffed Turkey DinnerLast year, in the aftermath of the 2016 election, families shortened their turkey dinners by 20-30 minutes. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a family member with politics you find appalling will say something infuriating at the Thanksgiving table. We’ve been here before. The first Thanksgiving after the 2016 election was so tense that politically-divided families shortened their turkey dinners by 20-30 minutes last year, one study found. This Thanksgiving — the first after the inauguration of President Trump — people are as dug in as ever, experts say, but instead of pondering just the election results, they now have policies argue about — everything from hea...

Parasites, infections in N. Korean soldier who defected reveal country’s conditions

Hospital records from a soldier who defected from North Korea this month offer telling details about health problems in the closed country. The 24-year-old soldier had parasitic infections and a dangerous hepatitis infection — conditions that speak to poor sanitation and rough conditions in North Korea. Most shocking, perhaps, are reports of large parasitic worms, some measuring 11 inches, recovered from his intestines. “An estimated 5 million people in North Korea have intestinal roundworms. That’s 20 percent of the population,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor. Doctors found the parasites — likely Ascaris roundworms — while repairing intestinal damage from multiple bullet wounds the soldier sustained during his escape....

Burst of cold air, lake-effect snow to hit Midwest, Northeast

© AccuWeather U.S. holiday weather forecast A quick dose of cold air with lake-effect snow will race across the Upper Midwest and into the northeastern United States this weekend. While harsh conditions are forecast to hold off until after the Black Friday shopping rush in most locations, those heading out this weekend with hopes of avoiding big crowds will have to bundle up and some may have to drive over snow-covered roadways. This weekend’s cold episode will pale in comparison to the blast that hit on Nov. 9-11, when the lowest temperatures of the season so far were established. However, the cold shot will follow a brief period of surging temperatures to end the week and may pack a shock as a result. It may feel 40 degrees colder from one day to the next. Spotty rain showers may m...

Gary Cohn feigned bad phone connection to end Trump call: senator

© Kevin Lamarque/REUTERS The White House denied that claims that Cohn faked the President out. White House economic czar Gary Cohn pretended to have a bad phone connection in order to end a call with President Trump earlier this month, a Democratic senator said Wednesday. Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware told CNN that Cohn was having a discussion with Democratic senators about tax reform when the President phoned in while traveling in Asia. “Fifteen minutes later, the President is still talking,” Carper recalled. “And I said to Gary, it was a room where we’re all sitting around this big table, and I said, ‘Gary, why don’t you do this, just take … your cellphone back and just say, ‘Mr. President, you’re brilliant! But we’re losing contact, and I think we’re go...
