Vince Bucci/Invision/AP, File After The New York Times and The New Yorker exposed years of alleged sexual harassment and assault by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, the floodgates have been opened across the economy. Allegations have overwhelmed influential figures in industries as diverse as art, food, media, sports, and technology. Powerful men who had for decades preyed on women without rebuke are being toppled from their positions of influence. Read Full Article »

Five Reasons to Hate the Tax Code as Is

President Donald Trump has proposed what he calls the biggest tax cut since Ronald Reagan. He also wants vast simplification so that Americans can fill out their taxes on a postcard return. Let’s hope that part of this reform package will be to defang the IRS, which treats Americans as if they are guilty until proven innocent and invades the basic privacy rights of citizens. Tax Cuts in Search of a Problem

AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes House Republicans finally rolled out their proposed tax plan on Thursday, after they spent the preceding couple of days hashing out, well, most of the details, from the sounds of it. Much of what the bill includes is exactly what you’d expect: Big cuts in the taxes paid by corporations and the wealthiest Americans, along with the elimination of tax breaks that mostly benefit people in the blue states and cities that conservatives don’t believe are real America. Kershaw’s entrance was five runs too late to save the Dodgers’ season

11:31 AM ET LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers had a plan to make Clayton Kershaw a World Series champion, and probably a Game 7 hero, too. All of those doubts about his postseason chops — the one jagged edge on the smooth surface of his career — would be removed. Can’t you just see him holding up that trophy, the official cap backward on his head, his hair surfing his forehead, a crooked smile destined to be described as either “relieved” or “redemptive,” the headlines shouting “FINALLY”? The successful implementation of the plan meant it would be his kids, not the ones wearing Astros orange, running all over the Dodger Stadium infield and doing cartwheels between third and home after Game 7 of the World Series. It would be Justin Verland...

Luck headed to IR but ‘excited’ for his future

2:37 PM ET The Indianapolis Colts are placing quarterback Andrew Luck on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday. Luck has not played this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum on Jan. 15. Luck told the team’s website that he is optimistic about his future. “I wish I was better and 100 percent this season, but that’s not the case,” Luck said. “I know I’ll be better from this. I know I’ll be a better quarterback, teammate, person and player from this, and I’m excited for the future.” Luck sought more opinions this week on why his shoulder is not getting better two weeks after the team gave him a cortisone shot to help with soreness. Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Thursday the team has not heard from any d...

The Eternal Sunshine of Steven Stamkos

1:51 PM ET Greg WyshynskiESPN The question haunts Steven Stamkos. Especially in the good times, like now, when the 27-year-old Tampa Bay Lightning captain is leading the NHL with 24 points in 13 games and assaulting the record book along with linemate Nikita Kucherov. What’s going to happen this time? Will it be like in November 2013, when he had 14 goals and 9 assists in his first 17 games before being stretchered out of Boston’s TD Garden with a broken tibia, suffered in a collision with the goal post? Will it be like in April 2016, when a 36-goal campaign was derailed by a blood clot near his right collarbone, requiring surgery that kept him out until Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals? Will it be like in November 2016, when he had 20 points in 17 games before tearing u...
