Haley: Iran government ‘tested by its own citizens’

© Provided by AFP US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley singles out Iran in New Year’s message Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday Iran’s government is “being tested by its own citizens” after three days of protests against the clerical regime. “We pray that freedom and human rights will carry the day,” she said in a statement. Haley’s comments echoed those of US President Donald Trump, who earlier Sunday said the United States was watching closely for human rights violations. “Big protests in Iran. The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism. Looks like they will not take it any longer,” Trump tweeted. Over the past year, Trump has held out...

Big Apple ball drop to go on as cold weather ices plans in Northeast

Click to expand Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO UP NEXT Brutally cold weather has iced plans for scores of events in the Northeast from New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day. But the show will go on in New York City, where people will start gathering in Times Square up to nine hours before the famous ball drop. Authorities are warning revelers to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, lay off the booze and bring some hand warmers. They say it could be one of the coldest New Year’s Eve ball drops on record. The coldest New Year’s Eve in Times Square was in 1917, when it was 1 degree at midnight. This year, the forecast is for 11 degrees with a wind chill around zero, which would tie for second with 1962. Extra New York Fire Department personnel are going to be on...

For Trump, a Year of Reinventing the Presidency

WASHINGTON — When President Trump meets with aides to discuss policy or prepare for a speech, he may ask about the pros and cons of a new proposal. He may inquire about its possible effect. He may explore the best way to frame his case. But there is one thing he almost never does. “He very seldom asks how other presidents did this,” said John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff. Mr. Trump is the 45th president of the United States, but he has spent much of his first year in office defying the conventions and norms established by the previous 44, and transforming the presidency in ways that were once unimaginable. Sign Up For the Morning Briefing Newsletter Under Mr. Trump, it has become a blunt instrument to advance personal, policy and political goals. He has revolutionized the way p...

The last time Virginia had a tied election, this teen was in the middle of it

A Washington Post story from 1971 about Stephen Burns’s ballot sits on a table in his home in Washington. (Carolyn Van Houten/The Washington Post) The last time Virginia pulled a name out of a hat to decide an election, Stephen Burns was a newly minted voter, so jazzed about getting the franchise that he was willing to jump through multiple hoops to pick his state legislators. That was back in November 1971, just months after the 26th Amendment had lowered the voting age from 21. An 18-year-old from Springfield, Burns had to vote absentee since he was off at college in Upstate New York. He had to go to the Colgate University registrar’s office to fill out his ballot since, in those days, absentees needed to be notarized. And when he realized he’d made a couple of mistakes, he took great pa...

‘You just can’t tweet here’: Graham urges Trump to lay out Iran strategy

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.). (Andrew Harnik/AP) Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) called on President Trump to lay out his strategy toward Iran as the country faces its largest protests since 2009, saying such a move would help bolster the United States in its conflict with North Korea. Predicting that the new year will be one of “opportunity and extreme danger,” Graham said Trump should withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 and give a national address explaining his approach. Graham warned that North Korea is watching how the United States conducts itself as protests in Iran continue for a third day, and he said that Trump’s tweeting of support for the Iranian people is not an adequate response. “The Iranians are watching us in North Korea, and North Korea is watching us in I...

Did McGregor-Nurmagomedov just become the No. 1 fight to see in 2018?

1:59 AM ET LAS VEGAS — Let’s talk about the landscape of the UFC’s lightweight division as we head into 2018. It’s actually pretty similar to what it was heading into 2017 — with the exception of about $100 million. It starts with Conor McGregor, which, frankly, doesn’t add a whole lot of clarity. Prior to UFC 219’s main event between Cris Cyborg and Holly Holm, a multitude of undercard fights had major implications. Here’s how it went down. Taken to the fifth round for the first time in her career, Cris Cyborg proved to be too physical for challenger Holly Holm and scored a unanimous-decision victory to retain her 145-pound crown Saturday night at UFC 219. 1 Related At this time last year, McGregor was looking at an extended break to celebra...

Trump Ramps Up Rhetoric Early on Eve of Mid-Term Election Year

President Donald Trump spent his New Year’s Eve focused on the coming midterm election year, touting his administration’s accomplishments in an effort to boost congressional Republicans facing tough historic and polling trends. “Why would smart voters want to put Democrats in Congress in 2018 Election when their policies will totally kill the great wealth created during the months since the Election,” the president, who’s spending the holidays at his Palm Beach, Florida, club, said in a Twitter message on Sunday. “People are much better off now.” The problems facing Republicans in next year’s elections could be “enormous,” analyst Charlie Cook, whose assessment of the partisan outlook for House and Senate races is carefully watched across the political spectrum, wrote earlier this month.  ...
