Nelson Mandela funeral: ‘Millions misspent’

Image copyright AFP Image caption Four years have passed since South African hero Nelson Mandela died South Africa’s corruption watchdog has found officials misused millions of dollars during Nelson Mandela’s funeral four years ago. According to the report, 300m rand ($22m; £16m) was redirected from a development fund to help with costs. It had been earmarked for things like “sanitation, the replacement of mud schools and the refurbishment of hospitals,” the report stated. Instead, the authorities allegedly spent it on items like $24 T-shirts. Who Is the New Euro-Area Boss Tasked With Bloc’s Reform Drive?

Euro-area finance ministers chose their Portuguese counterpart, Mario Centeno, to head the so-called Eurogroup in a bid to boost reforms in the currency union as the region’s economic recovery takes hold. Centeno, 50, who will succeed Jeroen Dijsselbloem of the Netherlands next month at the key euro area post, has a job cut out for him, as the bloc strives to complete its banking union and narrow the economic gap across the region. “We have the ability to make the euro area grow a little bit faster and for a longer period of time if we implement the reforms needed,” Centeno said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Brussels right after his election. “The time window that we have following the electoral cycle that several countries had recently, the political cycle that is just begi...

How Dollar General became rural America’s store of choice

EVENSVILLE, Tenn.—The local Dollar General store, built on a rural highway and surrounded by farmland, sells no fresh meat, greens or fruit. Yet the 7,400-square-foot steel-sided store has most of what Eddie Watson needs. The selection echoes a suburban drugstore chain, from shower curtains to breakfast cereal, toilet paper, plastic toys and camouflage-pattern socks. Refrigerators and freezers on one wall hold milk, eggs and frozen pizza. Many items are sold in mini bottles or small bags, keeping costs lower than a trip to the Wal-Mart Supercenter down the road. The two registers are staffed by one cashier, except during rush hours after school and after work. “It’s just closer,” said Mr. Watson, a 53-year-old construction worker who filled his cart with cans of chicken soup, crackers, col...

When they weren’t holding hands, Ashton kept an arm wrapped gently around his wife and former co-star, whispering into her ear with comments that apparently got the Dolce & Gabbana-clad actress giggling. Held in Silicon Valley, the Breakthrough Prize Awards honor achievements in physics, life sciences and math — although Ashton and Mila probably deserve a medal of their own for making marriag...

Wisin Releases New Solo Album ‘Victory’

In the Latin music realm, solo life after being part of a reggaeton duo is a very rare thing.  Yet Wisin and Yandel have each managed to survive, transcend and even come back together after their split as the most successful reggaeton duo in history. And beyond his own career as a solo act, Wisin has also established himself as a sought-after producer and songwriter with an ear for developing hits for others; the successful CNCO album, for example, is largely his work.  On Friday, all that came together in the release of his newest solo effort, Victory (Sony Music). In keeping with the name, the album kicks off with a spoken word intro on keeping the path even against the strongest adversity. It’s an allusion, and homage, to Victoria, Wisin’s baby girl who died in Sept. 2016 at one-month o...

Alan Walker, Noah Cyrus & Juliander Perform ‘All Falls Down’ Live on YouTube: Watch

Did a bunch of Alan Walker fans just hack the YouTube main frame? Not really, but that’s kind of the premise of this cute intro the “Faded” producer made for his celebratory live performance of latest single “All Falls Down.” It marks his first on-stage appearance with collaborators Noah Cyrus and Juliander. It’s his way of thanking fans for pushing him past 10 million YouTube subscribers. A hazy, tropical melody lingers sweetly in the air under Cyrus’ f-bomb before building into a synthesized boom at the hook. It really is the most upbeat song to get you through a breakup. Juliander and Cyrus are near-perfect performers as Walker bangs the rhythms out on his live setup behind. Not pictured is production collaborator Digital Farm Animals. “Al...
