The bill needed unanimous approval from all senators in the 24-hour hotline process, meaning a single objection could move it to debate on the Senate floor — possibly killing it altogether at this point in the year. But instead of a bloodbath, the day ended in kisses and hugs as most sides came together to celebrate the bill’s passage, thanks to an 11th hour compromise. Americana Conference Highlights Its Place In A Divided Musical Era

If a casual observer wanted to understand the widening gap between mainstream country music and left-of-center Americana, visits to the Country Radio Seminar and the Americana Music Conference — held in Nashville Sept. 11-14 — would provide a strong overview. CRS panels have focused on growing sales, integrating digital tools and showcasing mostly glossy, feel-good music that celebrates a cultural segment. U2’s Bono Meets With the Pope, Says Francis Is ‘Aghast’ About Catholic Church Sex Abuse

U2 frontman Bono described Pope Francis as being “aghast” about sex abuse in the Catholic Church. The Irish singer met privately with Francis on Wednesday at the Vatican hotel where the pope lives to discuss themes that Bono told reporters included “the wild beast that is capitalism” and sustainable development. Bono said that because Francis visited Ireland recently, they spoke about the pontiff’s “feelings about what has happened in the church.” The Irish church’s reputation is stained by cases of pedophile priests and systematic abuse cover-ups. Bono said he told Francis how it looks to some that abusers are more protected than victims and “you can see the pain in his face, and I felt he was sincere.” Francis is under pressure to reveal what he knew about abusers.
