Dua Lipa’s ‘New Rules’ Gets a Synth-Heavy ’80s Remix

Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” just got the ‘80s treatment, after propelling the English singer-songwriter to the top 40 of the Hot 100. Newly streaked in nostalgic synths, the remix exists at a midpoint between the tongue-in-cheek nature of vaporwave and the ‘80s revivalism elevated by recent pop culture touchstones like Stranger Things. But a quick peek at the YouTube channel of Initial Talk, the Tokyo-based producer who created the remix, reveals a deep dedication to the sounds of the early MTV era. The producer has put an old spin on a string of relatively modern high-charting artists, including Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. Lipa’s music video received critical acclaim for its pop visuals — but Initial Talk lifts some fuzzy VCR footage of what appears to be an old dan...
