Music Modernization Act Passed Thanks to Last-Minute SiriusXM Compromise: Sources

The satellite radio service turned down an earlier deal a few weeks ago and continued to hammer away through lobbying efforts. A last minute compromise Tuesday (Sept. 18) afternoon between SiriusXM and other stakeholders allowed the Music Modernization Act (MMA) to fly through the Senate, sources tell Billboard. According to some familiar with the situation, it was unclear all day whether the MMA would pass unanimously through the Senate’s expedited hotlining process, as some sources say at least two senators were buying the arguments of SiriusXM — the main industry holdout on the legislation. SiriusXM was protesting about four elements of the legislation, including that the bill leaves out terrestrial radio from royalty payments for pre-1972 recordings, also known as the Class...

Pete Davidson Gets a New Tattoo of His Pet Pig With Ariana Grande

Pete Davidson has added yet another tattoo to his collection of Ariana Grande-inspired ink. After the couple brought home a baby pig to their New York City apartment this weekend, Davidson was quick to get a tattoo of their new pet, Piggy Smallz. The couple has been laying low on Instagram lately, but NY-based tattoo artist Mia Mariah posted an Instagram photo of Davidson’s new pig tattoo with the caption, “Thanks Pete.” It is unclear whether the Winnie the Pooh tattoo also included in the photo is dedicated to the 25-year-old pop singer too. The newly engaged couple is known for their public displays of affection, already having several tattoos dedicated to each other. On Twitter, fans gushed over the photos Ariana Grande shared of the new baby pig via her Instagram stor...

Alec Baldwin Says Justin Bieber & Hailey Baldwin ‘Just Went Off and Got Married’

Fans have been speculating about Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin’s relationship status since the pair visited a New York City courthouse last week. While People magazine reported that the couple is legally married, Hailey denied the news in a since-deleted tweet — and now her uncle Alec Baldwin is wading into the story. On Monday’s Emmy Awards red carpet, Alec Baldwin was asked about the young couple and seemingly confirmed that they are, in fact, already married. “They just went off and got married!” Alec said in an interview with Access when asked about what a Baldwin wedding was like. When Baldwin was asked about his niece’s whirlwind engagement earlier this month, his advice was that they needed to “spend time with each other.” He echoed...

Ozuna Gave Sony More Skin in the Game to Push Album No. 2, and It’s Paying Off With Record Streaming #s and Sold-Out Tour Dates

Ozuna doesn’t have an agent. He doesn’t have major sponsorships. He doesn’t have deals in place with AEG Live or Live Nation. And although his music is distributed and marketed by Sony Music U.S. Latin, he is signed to Dimelo Vi, the independent label owned by his manager, Vicente Saavedra. Yet right now, the 26-year-old artist from Puerto Rico is the top-selling Latin act in the market, and his Aura Tour may finish 2018 as the highest-grossing U.S. Latin tour, with over 30 arena dates scheduled until December. For the week ending Aug. 30, Ozuna’s second studio album, Aura, scored the year’s biggest week for a Latin album, with 49,000 equivalent album units, and the largest streaming week ever for a Latin release, according to Nielsen Music. Aura arrived at No...

SiriusXM Responds to ‘Stinging’ Artist Attacks Over Music Modernization Act Objections: ‘There Is Nothing Hidden or Underhanded’

SiriusXM’s opposition to elements of the Music Modernization Act has been met with a wave of protest from the creative community, unfairly so, according to the satellite broadcaster.  On Monday, some 150 musicians and industry professionals signed an open letter, threatening to boycott SiriusXM’s parent Liberty Media over its protest again the new bill. The likes of Paul McCartney, Sia Don Henley, Pink and Max Martin have called on SiriusXM to end the impasse, or else.  As previously reported, SiriusXM objected that the Act makes them legally responsible to pay for pre-1972 recordings the same as copyright law has for years made it pay for post-1972 recordings. Sirius has argued that the legislation gives an advantage to its main competitor, terrestrial radio, which doesn’t have to pay per...

Prince’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ Features in Capital One Commercial During the Emmys: Twitter Reacts

Now that was crazy. The Emmys are done and dusted for another year, and there were more than enough trophies changing hands, talking points and gags to keep viewers engaged.  But one unexpected moment really caught the attention of folks back home. A Capital One commercial aired during the Emmys broadcast which featured Prince’s ‘80s classic “Let’s Go Crazy”. Wait, what…woah?! During his lifetime, the Purple One was typically reluctant to sync his works in commercial campaigns. Any campaigns. For much of his career, even the Internet was out. Surely the late legend wouldn’t have been pumped about an ad for a credit card? Twitter responded accordingly. Check out some of the reaction below. Something tells me @prince is rolling over in his grave with @Capi...

Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan’s relationship story lives another day. The duo broke up a few weeks ago after a short-lived relationship, with rumors of Cyrus’ infidelity and a fake publicity setup swirling and denied.
